About the Band
Atlanta Pipe Band is based in Atlanta, Georgia, and was officially founded in 1970, though its beginnings go back to 1967 when Emory University student and piper Henry Frantz was featured by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Other pipers saw the article, made contact, and the beginnings of a new band formed within Atlanta’s Scottish community. The band was soon performing at parades, civic events, church services and was part of the first Stone Mountain Highland Games in 1972.
Over the decades, Atlanta Pipe Band became one of the leading performance and competition pipe bands in the southern United States. Its honours include US Open Pipe Band Champion in Grade 3, Eastern United States Pipe Band Champion in Grades 3 and 4, Southeast Pipe Band Champion, Southern Pipe Band Champion, and Midwest Pipe Band Champion.
The band has also performed in high-profile settings, with older accounts noting appearances for figures including Presidents Carter and Bush, Prince Charles, Mikhail Gorbachev and the Dalai Lama. It has also contributed to film and music projects, including credits linked to Into the Wild and Celtic Woman: Believe.
Today, Atlanta Pipe Band continues with Grade 3 and Grade 4 competition units, drawing members from metro Atlanta and across the Southeast.
