About the Band

Brisbane Pipe Band is a community pipe band based in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. It was founded in 1950, with early leadership including Sir John Chandler as Patron, Sir Thomas Hiley as Vice Patron, David McNeill as Pipe Major and Secretary, Sir William Glasgow as President Elect, J. S. McNeill as Chairman, and D. Gillespie as Treasurer. The band’s early story was later recorded by Keith Beakey, a piper with the band from 1969 to 1993, in City of Brisbane Pipe Band: An Anecdotal History 1950–1993.

Today, Brisbane Pipe Band is an incorporated, non-profit community group of pipers and drummers. It practises at Geebung and performs for public and private events across Brisbane and surrounding areas, while also competing in Australia’s east coast pipe band scene.

The band wears McNeill of Barra tartan and is a familiar presence at events such as Brisbane’s St Patrick’s Day Parade, Anzac Day marches and Labour Day March. Recent public listings also note Queensland State Championship wins in 2023 and 2024.
