About the Band

Dunoon Grammar School Pipe Band is the school pipe band of Dunoon Grammar School in Argyll and Bute. The school itself has records dating back to 1641, while the modern pipe band was started in 1973 by Neil Campbell, drawing initially on young pipers from Strachur and surrounding Cowal communities.

There are even earlier piping links at the school. Pipe Major John McLellan DCM of Dunoon helped teach the Dunoon Grammar School Cadet Pipe Band during the 1930s and 1940s, showing that school piping in Dunoon predates the present band structure. Local history also records that piping classes connected with Dunoon Grammar were being discussed in 1970, with tuition later expanding across Cowal schools.

Today, the band is a major school and community organisation, performing at parades, care homes, Remembrance events, local halls and Cowal Gathering-related occasions. Recent profiles describe it as the biggest band representing Dunoon Grammar School, with dozens of community outings alongside competition appearances.
