About the Band

George Heriot’s School Pipe Band is the school pipe band of George Heriot’s School in Edinburgh, one of Scotland’s oldest schools, founded in 1628. The pipe band tradition at Heriot’s began in 1948, when the Finlay family donated six sets of pipes, three side drums and a bass drum to the school, giving the programme its first proper lift-off.

Today, the band is a major part of school life, with four pipe bands covering different ages and ability levels. Pupils progress through a structured programme, with tuition, band practices and performance opportunities across both primary and secondary sections.

Heriot’s has been active in youth competition, including the Scottish Schools Pipe Band Championships and RSPBA major championships. In 2025, the band earned second place overall and Best Drum Corps in Novice Juvenile A at the British Pipe Band Championships in Greenock.
