About the Band
Knox Grammar School Pipe Band, usually known as Knox Pipes & Drums, is the pipe band programme of Knox Grammar School in Wahroonga, New South Wales, Australia. Knox itself opened in 1924, and the school’s own material describes the Pipes & Drums as established in 1946, playing at commemorative occasions such as the Sydney ANZAC Day Parade and competing across Australia.
The programme is now one of Australia’s major school pipe band setups. Pipe Bands Australia lists Knox Grammar School Pipes & Drums as wearing MacPherson tartan and fielding registered competition bands in Grade 4A, Grade 4B, Novice Juvenile A and Novice Juvenile B, with a Prep Pipe Band also feeding younger players into the system.
Knox has toured internationally, including visits to the United Kingdom and New Zealand. The school notes that its 2019 UK trip was the band’s fifth UK tour, and that the band had won the Australian Pipe Band Championships in 2018. In 2025, Knox’s Pipes and Drums travelled to Invercargill for the New Zealand Pipe Band Championships, using the New Zealand nationals in years when the Australian Championships are not held.
