About the Band

MacMillan Pipe Band is the senior band within MacMillan United Pipe Bands, based in the Washington, D.C./Maryland area of the United States. The organisation began with MacMillan Pipe Band in 2001, after a reunion of alumni from local high school pipe bands created a new home for former students and other pipers and drummers in the region. (macmillanpb.org)

The band is named in honour of Donald Baxter MacMillan, the naval officer and Arctic explorer who served as second-in-command during Robert Peary’s Arctic expeditions. That gives the name a bit more backbone than “we liked the tartan and the letter M looked nice on a bass drum.” (pipeband.com)

MacMillan has since grown into a multi-band organisation, adding MacMillan-Birtles in 2004 and MacMillan-Dunn in 2012. The senior MacMillan band currently competes in Grade 2, travelling across the United States, Canada and Scotland. (macmillanpb.org)

Recent results show the band operating at a high level in North American Grade 2 competition. In 2026, MacMillan won both the Medley and MSR events at the American Pipe Band Championships in Norfolk, Virginia, taking the Grade 2 title.
