About the Band

St Andrew’s College Pipe Band is based at St Andrew’s College in Christchurch, New Zealand. It was formed in 1919, only two years after the school opened, when boys at the college asked Rector Sydney Dickinson to start a pipe band. Pipe Major James Erskine of the Canterbury Caledonian Society Pipe Band volunteered as tutor for the original group of 16 boys.

The band became a central part of St Andrew’s Scottish identity, performing at assemblies, prizegivings, Founders’ Day, open days, sports fixtures and major college occasions. The school marked the band’s centenary in 2019, celebrating 100 years of piping and drumming at the college.

St Andrew’s is widely regarded as New Zealand’s premier secondary school pipe band and has regularly won national and provincial championships. Its biggest international landmark came in 2013, when it won the World Juvenile Pipe Band Championship, a huge result for a New Zealand school band.

Today, the band remains one of the strongest school pipe band programmes in the Southern Hemisphere, combining tradition, tuition and serious contest ambition.
