About the Band

St Columba’s School Pipe Band is based at St Columba’s School in Kilmacolm, Inverclyde. The school itself was founded in 1897, while its modern piping and drumming programme has become one of the most visible parts of school life. Recent profiles note more than 120 pupils learning through the programme, with weekly tuition in pipes, snare, tenor and bass drum.

The band has developed into a strong schools competition outfit. In 2018, St Columba’s won the Junior B category at the Scottish Schools Pipe Band Championships, a major schools contest, with First Minister Nicola Sturgeon presenting prizes at the event.

The school later built further competitive momentum in the RSPBA juvenile grades. In 2023, St Columba’s celebrated becoming World Champions, marking one of the programme’s biggest achievements.

Today, the pipe band programme is supported by specialist instructors and regular after-school rehearsals, giving pupils a structured route from beginner lessons into full band performance.
