About the Band
Cullen Pipe Band is based in the village of Cullen in North Cork, Ireland, in the Sliabh Luachra region. The band was founded in 1941 and was originally known as Cullen Piper’s Band. Its beginnings are linked to Paddy Fitzgerald’s home in Mologhroe, where local postman and musician Micheal Rea encouraged young men to learn the practice chanter before progressing to the pipes.
Over the years, Cullen Pipe Band became an important part of local community life, performing at festivals, parades, sporting occasions and cultural events. It has also represented the area abroad, including a notable appearance in the St Patrick’s Day Parade in New York City in 2001.
Today, the band continues to promote piping and drumming through tuition, group performance and community involvement, preserving a musical tradition that has been part of Cullen for more than 80 years.
