About the Band
St Andrew’s College Pipe Band is based at St Andrew’s College in Christchurch, New Zealand. The band was formed in 1919 after pupils asked the school’s first Rector, Sydney Dickinson, for permission to create a pipe band. Pipe Major James Erskine of the Canterbury Caledonian Society Pipe Band became the first piping tutor, teaching the original group of 16 boys.
The band has remained an important part of College life for more than a century, performing at assemblies, prizegivings, Founders’ Day, sports fixtures and public occasions. In 2019, St Andrew’s celebrated the pipe band’s centenary, recognising its place in the school’s heritage.
Today, St Andrew’s College Pipe Band is regarded as one of New Zealand’s leading school pipe bands, regularly competing at provincial and national championships while continuing to develop young pipers and drummers.
