About the Band

The Worcester Kiltie Pipe Band is based in Worcester, Massachusetts, and was founded in 1916 by Scottish immigrant Thomas Denholm. It is one of the oldest active pipe bands in the United States and has long worn the Modern Scott tartan, reflecting early support from the Clan Scott organisation.

The band rose to international prominence under Pipe Major James “Jim” Kerr, who came from Scotland in 1956. With Kerr and leading drummer Alex Colville, Worcester Kiltie became a major Grade 1 force, winning multiple North American Championships in the 1960s and early 1970s. In 1964, it became the first US pipe band to compete at the World Pipe Band Championships, and in 1969 it won at Lesmahagow in Scotland against top-level opposition.

After later years in the lower grades, the band was revived from 2012 under David Methven and Colum Lundt. Its centenary year, 2016, brought a major triumph when Worcester Kiltie won the Grade 3A World Championship. The band now competes in Grade 2, carrying serious American pipe band history.
