About the Band
Ayr Pipe Band Society is based in Ayr, South Ayrshire, and traces its origins to 1910, when local business owners supported the creation of a town pipe band to help promote Ayr and its civic life. The band’s first Pipe Major was James Wallace.
The band’s early progress was interrupted by the First World War, but it was revived in 1934 under Pipe Major William Johnston. Around this period, the organisation became known as Ayr Pipe Band Society. It later became one of the earliest registered members of the Scottish Pipe Band Association, later the RSPBA, with registration number 3.
Ayr has a long record of competition and community performance. One of its notable high points came in 1976, when the band entered the Grade 1 arena under Pipe Major David Clark, with many young Ayrshire players developed from within the band. Today, Ayr Pipe Band Society continues as an active Grade 4A band, promoting piping and drumming through teaching, competition and local performance.
