About the Band

Benoni High School Pipe Band is based in Benoni, Gauteng, South Africa, and was founded in 1976. It began with a small group of learners at Benoni High School and grew into one of South Africa’s best-known school pipe bands.

The band developed quickly, achieving early success at the Royal Scottish Gathering in 1979 and continuing to build a strong competition record through the 1980s and 1990s. Its programme has focused on teaching young pipers and drummers, while giving pupils experience in both performance and contest work.

A major highlight came in 2009, when Benoni High School Pipe Band became the first South African pipe band to win a World Championship title in Glasgow. The band has also held numerous South African championship titles and remains an important part of school and community music life in Benoni.
