About the Band
Sons of Scotland Pipe Band is based in Ottawa, Ontario, and was founded in 1896 by D. L. McLean. It is recognised as Canada’s oldest civilian pipe band and was the first pipe band heard in the nation’s capital, performing on Burns Night, 25 January 1896.
The band was originally connected with the Sons of Scotland Benevolent Association, Camp Argyll No. 26, and helped establish Scottish piping and drumming as part of Ottawa’s cultural life. Over the years it has performed at parades, concerts, civic occasions, national celebrations and community events.
Today, Sons of Scotland remains an active teaching and performance organisation, offering piping and drumming tuition and competing at Grade 5 level. The band also supports major cultural events such as National Tartan Day on Parliament Hill and continues to represent Scottish-Canadian heritage in Ottawa.
