About the Band

Robert Malcolm Memorial Pipe Band was founded in January 1994 in British Columbia in memory of two young Simon Fraser University Pipe Band pipers, Robert Barbulak and Malcolm Bokenfohr, who died in a motor vehicle accident in late 1993. The organisation was created to continue developing younger pipers and drummers, building on teaching work already being done within the SFU Pipe Band circle.

Affiliated with the Simon Fraser University Pipe Band, RMM became a major youth and development programme, giving players a structured route from beginner and lower-grade competition through to higher-level bands. It has fielded bands across several grades, including Grades 5, 4, 3 and 2, and has helped many players progress into the six-time World Champion SFU Pipe Band.

The organisation has also built a strong competition record in its own right, winning six World Pipe Band Championships across multiple grades. Today, Robert Malcolm Memorial remains one of North America’s best-known pipe band development systems, mixing tuition, competition and community performance with a proper conveyor belt of talent. Tiny chanters in, world-class players out.
