About the Band

Pretoria Highlanders Pipes & Drums is based in Pretoria, South Africa, and is linked to the former Pretoria Highlanders Regiment, which was raised in 1939 during the Second World War. An early pipe band was associated with the regiment, while the modern Pretoria Highlanders Pipes & Drums was established in 1979.

The band was disbanded in 2005 after losing official defence force support, but was later revived, with its first re-gathering taking place on 13 April 2013. The regiment itself was disbanded in 2017, but the pipe band continued to operate independently.

The Pretoria Highlanders tradition includes the Hunting Stewart tartan and the nickname “Jacaranda Jocks”, reflecting Pretoria’s identity as the Jacaranda City. Today, the band continues to represent that regimental heritage through piping, drumming, public performance and South African pipe band activity.
