About the Band
The Simon Fraser University Pipe Band (SFUPB), based in Burnaby, British Columbia, is one of the most successful pipe bands in the modern era. It was founded in 1969 at Simon Fraser University by Pipe Major Terry Lee and a small group of students, originally as a university band but with ambitions well beyond campus life.\n
Under Terry Lee’s long-term leadership, the band quickly progressed through the grades, reaching Grade 1 in the early 1970s. From there, it became a consistent international contender, competing regularly in Scotland against the world’s best.\n
SFUPB’s breakthrough came in 1995, when they won their first World Pipe Band Championship in Glasgow. They went on to dominate the late 1990s and early 2000s, winning multiple World titles (1999, 2001, 2008, 2009, 2016, 2018), establishing themselves alongside the great Scottish bands despite being based in Canada—no small feat given the travel and logistics.\n
The band is known for a distinctive musical style: technically precise but also innovative, often pushing ensemble expression and tempo interpretation further than traditional norms. Their drum corps, led for many years by Reid Maxwell, has been especially influential in shaping modern pipe band drumming.\n
While it retains a strong connection to the university, SFUPB operates as an elite, invitation-based organisation, drawing top players from across Canada and internationally.
