About the Band
African Skye Pipe Band is based in Johannesburg, South Africa. It was officially formed in January 1998 by pipers and drummers who had left the Witwatersrand Rifles Pipe Band the previous year. In late 1997, the group met regularly in Kensington, Johannesburg, to practise and agree the new band’s name, identity and tartan.
The band quickly became part of South Africa’s competitive pipe band scene, with activity across multiple grades over the years. It has fielded separate sections, including Grade 3 and Grade 4 bands, each with its own leadership structure.
African Skye has focused strongly on competition, tuition and musical development, while also performing at parades and public events. Today, it remains an active South African pipe band organisation, supporting both experienced players and developing pipers and drummers.
