About the Band
St. Andrew’s Pipe Band of Detroit is linked to the St. Andrew’s Society of Detroit, one of Michigan’s oldest Scottish cultural organisations, founded in 1849. The Society has long supported Scottish music, Highland games and cultural activity in the Detroit area.
The pipe band tradition within the Society was strengthened in 1952, when Walter Steward Rose, a professional piper, began teaching Highland bagpipe to the sons of Society members. Earlier Detroit piping history also shows that many members of the Ford Motor Company Pipe Band, formed in 1932, came from St. Andrew’s Pipe Band in Detroit.
Today, St. Andrew’s Pipe Band of Detroit promotes learning and competing in Scottish arts and remains active in the Detroit metro area. It continues the Society’s long connection with piping, performance, heritage and community events.
