About the Band

St. Thomas Episcopal School Pipe Band is part of St. Thomas’ Episcopal School in Houston, Texas. The school was founded in 1955, and its bagpipe programme became one of the most distinctive school music traditions in the United States, combining Highland piping, drumming and dancing within the school’s wider classical education setting.

The school pipe band has travelled to Scotland several times to compete at the World Pipe Band Championships in Glasgow, where its youth programme earned multiple championship successes. The wider St. Thomas piping tradition also led to the creation of the St. Thomas Alumni Pipe Band, established in 1988, allowing former pupils and experienced players to continue competing beyond school age.

St. Thomas Alumni later became one of the leading pipe bands in the United States, affiliated with the school programme and made up largely of former students. It was promoted to Grade 1 in 2019 and has represented Houston at the top level of international pipe band competition. A school band that grew into a full-blown Texas piping pipeline, basically: homework, chanters, and then Glasgow.
