About the Band
Stuart Highlanders Pipe Band was founded in 1964 under the auspices of the First Parish Church in Bedford, Massachusetts. The original group first considered forming a banjo band, but after realising tuition would be hard to find, a Scottish-descended parishioner suggested a bagpipe band instead. A wise save, frankly. The banjo lobby was denied.
Based in the greater Boston metropolitan area, the Stuart Highlanders developed into a prize-winning performing and competing Scottish Highland pipe band. The organisation has long promoted Scottish piping, drumming and culture through public performances, Highland games and teaching.
The band has competed across eastern North America and Scotland, and in 2014 its upper-level band was upgraded by the RSPBA to Grade 1 after merging with the former Oran Mor Pipe Band of New York, while remaining Grade 2 under EUSPBA at that time. Today, the Stuart Highlanders continue as an active New England pipe band organisation, combining competition, performance and tuition.
