It was a busy weekend across the pipe band world, with results landing from Scotland, Northern Ireland, Canada, the United States and Australia. Eight competitions fed into the weekend picture, giving the rankings model plenty to chew on, from small Highland Games contests to deeper championship fields.

The weekend included:

  • Hamilton Valley Gathering Competition, Ontario
  • Innerleithen Pipe Band Championships, Scotland
  • Mid-Ulster Championships, Northern Ireland
  • Milwaukee Highland Games, Wisconsin
  • Portland Highland Games, Oregon
  • Girvan Highland Games, Scotland
  • Markinch Highland Games, Scotland
  • Queensland Pipe Band Championships / Tartan Spectacular, Australia

Overall Weekend Picture

The standout theme was dominant winners across multiple disciplines. Several bands took first place while also topping piping, drumming and ensemble, the kind of clean card that tends to perform well in a ranking model.

Bands such as George Watson’s College, Burntisland & District, Moneygore, Cascadia, Portland Metro, Madison Pipes & Drums, Kirkcaldy & District, and Brisbane Boys College all produced results that should give the rankings a proper nudge.

There were also several contests where the final placing hid a more interesting story underneath. Some bands placed lower overall despite strong discipline results, especially where drumming or ensemble rankings pulled against piping. That is exactly where the rankings become useful: they look beyond “who lifted the silverware” and start asking, “who is building real form?”

Tiny wee spreadsheet detective with a sporran, basically.

Competition Results and Analysis

Hamilton Valley Gathering Competition

Hamilton Valley produced clear winners across Grades 3, 4 and 5.

In Grade 3, Guelph Pipe Band took first place with a clean sweep across piping, drumming and ensemble. Hamilton Police Pipe Band finished second.

In Grade 4, Mohawk Valley Frasers Pipe Band took the win, finishing first in piping and drumming, although ensemble placed them fourth. Hamilton Police Pipe Band were second, with Dundas Pipes & Drums third.

In Grade 5, Peel Regional Police Pipe Band won the grade, ahead of London Fire Fighters Pipe Band and Hamilton Police Pipe Band. The interesting discipline story came from The Spirit of Ontario Pipe Band, who placed fourth overall but took first in drumming.

Ranking note: Guelph’s Grade 3 clean sweep should score strongly. Spirit of Ontario’s drumming win is also worth watching, even if the overall placing was lower.

Innerleithen Pipe Band Championships

Innerleithen was a strong day for George Watson’s College, who claimed wins in Grade 2, Grade 3, Grade 4A and Novice Juvenile B.

In Grade 2, George Watson’s College won with straight firsts, ahead of Preston Lodge High School.

In Grade 3, George Watson’s College again took first place with another clean card. Preston Lodge were second, followed by Tweedvale and Penicuik & District.

In Grade 4A, George Watson’s College took the win, helped by firsts in drumming and ensemble. Barrhead & District were second, with strong piping results, while Preston Lodge High School finished third after taking first in one piping judge.

In Grade 4B, Stockbridge Pipe Band won with straight firsts, ahead of Dunbar Royal British Legion.

In Novice Juvenile B, George Watson’s College completed another straight-first result, with Preston Lodge second.

Ranking note: George Watson’s College had one of the strongest overall weekends on the Scottish circuit. Multiple grade wins and repeated discipline strength should make them one of the weekend’s main ranking stories.

Mid-Ulster Championships

Mid-Ulster was the deepest and most competitive event of the weekend, with strong fields across several grades.

In Grade 1, Ravara Pipe Band out flexing their muscles before next weekends major

In Grade 2, Manorcunningham Pipe Band won with straight firsts. Tullylagan Pipe Band were second, followed by Matt Boyd Memorial, Kildoag, Major Sinclair Memorial, Cloughfin and Cullybackey.

In Grade 3A, Matt Boyd Memorial Pipe Band won the grade, taking firsts in piping, drumming and ensemble, despite one piping judge placing them fourth. Major Sinclair Memorial were second, while McNeillstown finished third.

In Grade 3B, Black Raven Pipe Band won, with Upper Crossgare second and New Ross & District third. This was one of the more interesting cards: Upper Crossgare topped both piping judges but were pulled back by drumming, while Black Raven’s ensemble strength helped seal the result.

In Grade 4A, Moneygore Pipe Band delivered one of the cleanest performances of the weekend, taking first across all disciplines. Ballybriest were second and Cottown third.

In Grade 4B, Tullylagan Pipe Band took first place, ahead of Hollymount, Bready Ulster Scots, J Forde Memorial, Major Sinclair Memorial, Raphoe Ulster Scots and Garvagh.

Ranking note: Mid-Ulster should carry good ranking weight because of field depth. Moneygore’s straight-first Grade 4A result, Ravara’s Grade 1 win, and Black Raven’s Grade 3B result all look significant.

Milwaukee Highland Games

Milwaukee gave the Midwest pipe band scene a tidy rankings contribution.

In Grade 3, Turlach Ur Pipe Band won, ahead of Chicago Celtic Pipe Band and Chicago Stockyard Kilty Band. Chicago Celtic had strong drumming and ensemble results, but Turlach Ur held enough across the card to take the grade.

In Grade 4, Madison Pipes & Drums finished first, with Chicago Stockyard Kilty Band second and Dundee Scottish Pipe Band third. Madison topped piping, drumming and ensemble overall, despite one piping judge placing Chicago Stockyard first.

In Grade 5, Celtic Nations Pipes & Drums won, ahead of Blackwell & District, City of Rockford, Chicago Highlanders, James Enright Sr. Memorial and Celtic Cross.

Ranking note: Madison’s Grade 4 win looks especially strong. Celtic Nations also had a good all-round card in Grade 5.

Portland Highland Games

Portland was a strong day for the BCPA and west coast US bands.

In Grade 2, Cascadia Pipe Band took first place with a clean card.

In Grade 3, Portland Metro Pipe Band won with straight firsts.

In Grade 4, results show strong performances from Northwest Junior Pipe Band, Kevin R. Blandford Memorial Pipe Band, Portland Metro Youth, Cascadia, and Clan MacLeay. The duplicated contest entries suggest multiple events or summaries may be represented, but Northwest Junior and Kevin R. Blandford both appear strongly in the top positions.

In Grade 5, Tacoma Scots Pipe Band won with straight firsts, ahead of Clan MacLeay.

Ranking note: Cascadia and Portland Metro delivered the cleanest ranking signals. Tacoma Scots also look strong from a Grade 5 perspective.

Girvan Highland Games

Girvan produced a smaller but useful Scottish results set.

In Grade 3B, Williamwood Pipe Band took first place with straight firsts.

In Grade 4A, Troon Blackrock Pipe Band won, ahead of Irvine & District Pipe Band.

In Grade 4B, 1st Troon Boys Brigade Pipe Band finished first, with Dean Castle Pipes & Drums second, Irvine & District third and Troon Blackrock fourth.

In the Open contest, Williamwood Pipe Band took first place, followed by 1st Troon Boys Brigade, Dean Castle, and Troon Blackrock.

Ranking note: Williamwood had the standout Girvan result, winning both Grade 3B and Open. That kind of double appearance can matter if the model rewards repeated contest strength.

Markinch Highland Games

Markinch was another useful Scottish contest, with several strong performances across grades.

In Grade 2, Burntisland & District Pipe Band took first place with straight firsts, ahead of Lochgelly High School and Methil & District.

In Grade 3, Burntisland & District won again, also taking first across the main disciplines. Methil & District were second, Govan Community third, and Lochgelly High School fourth.

In Grade 4A, Kirkcaldy & District Pipe Band took first place, winning both piping judges and ensemble. High School of Dundee were second, with Lochgelly High School third. City of St. Andrews finished fourth but took first in drumming.

In Grade 4B, Queensferry Pipes & Drums won, ahead of Uddingston Strathclyde, Kincardine & District, and Alyth & District.

In Novice Juvenile B, Edinburgh Academy Pipe Band took first place, ahead of High School of Dundee and Burntisland & District.

Ranking note: Burntisland & District were the obvious Markinch headline. Kirkcaldy & District also produced a strong Grade 4A win, while City of St. Andrews’ drumming result is worth noting.

Queensland Pipe Band Championships / Tartan Spectacular

Queensland delivered one of the biggest result sets of the weekend, with repeated entries suggesting multiple events or contest summaries across the same grades.

In Grade 2, Emmanuel College Highlanders at UQ Pipe Band finished ahead of St. Andrew’s Pipe Band AU, with Emmanuel taking the overall win.

In Grade 3, the top positions were contested by Brisbane Boys College Pipe Band, BBC Old Collegians, Old Scotch Pipes & Drums, and Governor MacQuarie Memorial. Brisbane Boys College and BBC Old Collegians both appear strongly across the results.

In Grade 4A, Australian Federal Police Pipes & Drums were the standout name, taking first place in the listed results. City of Ipswich, Governor MacQuarie Memorial, Moree Caledonian Society, Gold Coast Tweed, and Queensland Irish Association were also in the field.

In Grade 4B, Brisbane Boys College Pipe Band had the strongest top-line result, with Wynnum RSL, Brisbane Pipe Band, Moree Caledonian Society, Murrumba, and Scots PGC also featuring.

In Grade 5, Brisbane Boys College Pipe Band took first with straight firsts.

In Novice Juvenile A, Brisbane Boys College also took first place, and in Novice Juvenile B, Brisbane Boys College finished first ahead of Wynnum RSL Juvenile Pipe Band.

Ranking note: Brisbane Boys College had a major weekend across multiple grades. Australian Federal Police Pipes & Drums and Emmanuel College Highlanders also posted strong results that should matter in the next recalculation.
