Pipe Band Weekend Preview

A Busy Weekend Across Scotland, Ireland, North America and Australia
The pipe band season gathers pace this weekend with a packed competition schedule across several countries, as bands continue to build form, test medleys and MSRs, and chase valuable results ahead of the major championship season.
In Scotland, attention turns to Innerleithen Pipe Band Championships on Saturday 6 June, hosted at Vale of Leithen Football Park, with competitions listed for Grades 2, 3, 4A, 4B and Novice Juvenile B, alongside Drum Major events. The RSPBA calendar also confirms Markinch Highland Games and Girvan Highland Games on Sunday 7 June, giving Scottish bands another busy weekend of competitive opportunities. Markinch includes a wide grade spread from Grade 1 through the juvenile and novice juvenile grades, while Girvan features Grades 2, 3A, 3B, 4A and 4B.
Northern Ireland also has a key contest this weekend, with the Mid-Ulster Section Championships taking place at Cookstown High School on Saturday 6 June. The event includes Grades 1, 2, 3A, 3B, 4A and 4B, plus Adult, Juvenile, Junior and Novice Drum Major sections.
Further afield, the weekend has a strong international flavour. In Australia, the Queensland Pipe Band Championships / Tartan Spectacular Festival takes place on Sunday 7 June at Brisbane Boys’ College, with the event promoted as running from 9:00am to 4:00pm and featuring pipe bands as part of a wider Scottish cultural festival.
Across North America, there is also plenty to watch. The Portland Highland Games are scheduled for Saturday 6 June at Washington County Fairgrounds in Hillsboro, Oregon, with pipe band competition included as part of the Games programme. The Milwaukee Highland Games also take place on Saturday 6 June at Croatian Park in Franklin, Wisconsin, with the Midwest Pipe Band Association listing the event among its upcoming contests. In Canada, the Hamilton Gathering is also listed for Saturday 6 June, with PPBSO band and solo competitions noted for all grades except Professional.
For many bands, this weekend will be about sharpening the performance edge before the next major test. For others, it is a chance to climb the rankings, recover from earlier results, or put down a statement performance before the season properly catches fire.
From Innerleithen to Cookstown, Markinch to Brisbane, and Portland to Milwaukee, it is another weekend where the pipe band map is nicely covered in tartan pins.
As always, Pipe Band Rankings will continue tracking results as they become available.
