About the Band

City of Aberdeen Pipe Band is a community pipe band based in Aberdeen, Scotland, currently active in the lower-grade Scottish competition scene. Recent contest listings show the band competing in Grade 4B/4A, led by Pipe Major Michael Meehan, and wearing Gordon tartan. It appears regularly at north-east events including Banchory, Aberdeen Highland Games, Oldmeldrum Sports and Garioch.

The name has older echoes too. A City of Aberdeen Pipe Band appears in historic pipe band records, including the 1958 World Pipe Band Championships, where a City of Aberdeen ladies’ band under Pipe Major Miss Iris Keith placed second in the Ladies’ Pipe Band Championship. The exact continuity between that older band and the present organisation is not fully clear from public sources, so it is safest to treat it as part of Aberdeen’s wider pipe band heritage rather than a confirmed unbroken line.

Today’s band is focused on performance, competition and development. Fundraising material says the band tutors beginners on chanter and drums in Aberdeen and aims to get young local people involved in the pipe band world.
