About the Band

City of Brechin Pipe Band is based in Brechin, Angus, and is widely described as the oldest civilian pipe band, with roots dating to 1878. The band’s own site gives 1878 as its formation year, while its history page notes even older civic piping in Brechin, including a town piper appointed in 1688 and an early pipe band connected with the local volunteer detachment in the 1880s.

The band remains a self-funded community organisation and provides free piping and drumming tuition for all ages from its hall in Brechin. It is part of the RSPBA Dundee, Perth & Angus branch and is listed as competing in Grade 4B, wearing its own City of Brechin tartan.

In 2023, Storm Babet badly damaged the band’s practice hall, leading to a public rebuilding effort. Coverage at the time described City of Brechin as Scotland’s oldest civilian pipe band and highlighted its long community role since 1878.

Today, City of Brechin continues as a teaching, performance and competition band.
