About the Band

City of Tauranga Pipe Band is based in Tauranga, Bay of Plenty, New Zealand. The band marked its centenary in 2014, with its origins going back to 1914, when it was formed mainly by Scots as the Tauranga Scottish Society Pipe Band. Its first parade was at the Tauranga Athletics Highland Games in December 1914 under Pipe Major W. G. Brown.

Over time, the band has also been known as Tauranga Highland Pipe Band and City of Tauranga Highland Pipe Band, before becoming City of Tauranga Pipe Band. It originally wore Gordon tartan, while the modern band wears Roxburgh Red, a tartan associated with the ancient borough of Roxburgh in the Scottish Borders.

The band remains active in New Zealand competition and community performance. It was listed as Grade 3 New Zealand Champion in 2023, and 2024 championship entries showed City of Tauranga competing in Grade 2, reflecting its progress in the national scene.
