About the Band

Dunoon Argyll Pipe Band is a community pipe band from Dunoon on the Cowal peninsula in Argyll and Bute. The band competes and gives public performances, and is based at the Dunoon Argyll Pipe Band Hall at Black Park, which is also used for rehearsals, social gatherings and community groups.

The band sits in one of the most important towns in pipe band history. Dunoon is home to the Cowal Highland Gathering, where pipe band competitions were introduced in 1906 with the Argyll Shield, helping establish Cowal as one of the great historic centres of pipe band competition.

Dunoon itself has deep piping roots, including the legacy of Pipe Major John McLellan DCM of Dunoon, one of the great figures in Highland piping, who helped teach local bands and young players in the town during the 1930s and 1940s.

Recent public material shows Dunoon Argyll competing in Grade 4B, including appearances at Cowal Highland Gathering. While detailed public history for the band itself is fairly limited, its role is clear: a local Dunoon band carrying the town’s piping tradition into contests, parades and community events.
