About the Band

Hamilton Police Pipe Band is based in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, and was formed in 1961 by a group of Hamilton Police officers. At first, membership was restricted to serving police officers, but the band later opened to the wider public, including both male and female civilian members. Its first Pipe Major was Gord Macfarlane, followed over the years by figures including Sandy Keith, George Henderson, Don Forgan, Peter Aumonier and Trish Kirkwood.

The band has been both a police-service ceremonial band and a serious competition organisation. It has performed at parades, civic events, police ceremonies and memorial occasions, while also competing in the Ontario and wider North American pipe band scene. The Hamilton Police Service notes the band’s police origins and continuing role as part of the service’s public presence.

Competitively, Hamilton Police has had major success across several grades. Under Pipe Major Peter Aumonier and Leading Drummer John Gaudet, the band climbed rapidly from Grade 5 to Grade 2, winning honours including Grade 4 North American titles, Grade 3 success, a Grade 3B World Drum Corps title in 2005, and Grade 2 North American Championship success in 2008.

After later restructuring, the organisation continued with lower-grade and teaching activity, including youth instruction in pipes and drums. Today, Hamilton Police Pipe Band remains one of Canada’s recognised police pipe band names: part ceremonial unit, part teaching outfit, part competition survivor.
