About the Band
Lochgelly High School Pipe Band is a Fife school pipe band with a strong teaching and competition tradition. The school’s own recent material says the band’s history dates back to the school’s inception in 1987, and that Lochgelly has maintained a competitive pipe band in RSPBA competitions every year since formation. The deeper local piping story reaches further back into the 1960s, when renowned teacher Bob Shepherd helped establish school piping in the Ballingry/Auchterderran area, whose schools later fed into the new Lochgelly High School.
The band is self-funded, supported by Friends of Lochgelly High School Pipe Band, and performs at both national and international events. The school describes it as a well-established pipe band within its music department, alongside wider music opportunities for pupils.
Competitively, Lochgelly has built a serious reputation in the schools and juvenile scene. Recent school reports note strong results for both junior and senior bands, including drumming prizes and high placings against large fields. In 2025, public coverage showed Lochgelly competing at the Scottish Schools Pipe Band Championships, including a second place in the Intermediate category.
The band also found itself at the centre of a difficult 2024 World Championships results error, when it was initially announced as winner in Novice Juvenile B before the placing was later corrected. That was an administrative blunder, not a reflection on the pupils, and the band returned in 2025 still aiming high.
