About the Band

South Canterbury & Celtic (Nelson) Combined Youth Pipe Band is a New Zealand juvenile competition band created through co-operation between South Canterbury Highland Pipe Band of Timaru and Celtic Pipe Band of Nelson. Rather than being a single long-established town band, it is best understood as a youth development partnership, giving young players from both organisations enough strength and depth to compete together at national level.

The two parent bands both bring strong foundations. South Canterbury Highland Pipe Band traces its roots in Timaru back to 1903, while Celtic Pipe Band of Nelson is a much newer organisation, established in 2007 with ten learners at Stoke Primary School.

The combined juvenile band has appeared at New Zealand Pipe Band Championships, including the 2026 Juvenile event, where South Canterbury and Celtic (Combined) placed 2nd behind St Andrew’s College A. Reports from South Canterbury and Celtic also refer to their juvenile players combining for competitions and workshops, showing the partnership is both competitive and developmental.
