About the Band
Warrnambool & District Pipes & Drums is based in Warrnambool, Victoria, Australia. Its origins go back to January 1906, when the Warrnambool Pipe Band was formed by members of the local Caledonian Society and Scottish community to promote Highland music. The first Pipe Major was Simon Fraser, and the original band consisted of twelve pipers.
The band appeared regularly at local Highland gatherings before falling into recess during the First World War. It was reformed around 1935, paused again during the Second World War, and returned in 1946. In 1971, local men’s and ladies’ bands affiliated as the Warrnambool Combined Pipe Band, before becoming Warrnambool and District Pipe Band in 1973.
The present name, Warrnambool & District Pipes & Drums Inc., was adopted in 1984. The band remains active in community performance, teaching and competition, representing western Victoria’s Scottish musical tradition.
