About the Band

Wellington Red Hackle Pipe Band is based in Tawa, north of Wellington, New Zealand. The band was formed through the Tawa Caledonian Society, with its inaugural meeting held in October 1958 and its first public parade taking place at the Society’s Highland Games on Labour Day 1959.

The band was formerly known as Tawa and District Highland Pipe Band and has grown into one of Wellington’s active pipe band organisations, running competing bands across Grade 3, Grade 4A, Grade 4B and juvenile levels. It also has a strong learner programme for new pipers and drummers.

Today, Wellington Red Hackle performs locally and nationally, promotes Scottish music and tradition, and organises Pipes in the Park, Wellington’s regular pipe band competition held at Waitangi Park on the waterfront.
