About the Band

City of Newcastle Pipe Band is a competitive pipe band based in the North East of England, with links to HMS Calliope in Gateshead. The band has helped maintain and grow Highland piping and drumming in a region better known for brass bands, football and weather that thinks it’s doing shift work.

The band has competed under the Royal Scottish Pipe Band Association structure and has been one of England’s prominent contesting pipe bands. A notable achievement came in 2013, when City of Newcastle won the Champion of Champions title at Cowal Highland Gathering in Grade 4, earning recognition in the UK Parliament. At that time, the band was noted as having around 30 members and ambitions to progress from Grade 4 to Grade 3.

City of Newcastle continues to represent the North East at competitions and public performances, supporting player development while giving the area a strong presence in the wider pipe band scene.
