About the Band

Laidlaw Memorial Pipe Band, also known as Banbury and District – Laidlaw Memorial Pipes & Drums, is based around Banbury in Oxfordshire. Its roots go back to the Banbury & District Caledonian Pipe Band, formed in 1961 by John “Jock” Laidlaw, a former piper with the Queen’s Own Cameron Highlanders and a Burma Star veteran.

The band became a strong community pipe band during the 1960s and 1970s, performing at galas, shows and competitions, including the World Pipe Band Championships in Nottingham in 1979. It later became dormant after merging with the Scots Guards Association Pipe Band in Windsor in the early 2000s.

The band was revived after a 2022 meeting at the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo and relaunched as Laidlaw Memorial Pipes & Drums. The name honours both founder Jock Laidlaw and his uncle Daniel Laidlaw VC, the “Piper of Loos”. Today, the band wears Royal Stewart tartan and performs at competitions, parades, civic events and community occasions while rebuilding its competitive presence.
