About the Band
The St. Laurence O’Toole Pipe Band (SLOT), based in Dublin, Ireland, is one of the oldest and most influential pipe bands in the world. It was founded in 1910 by members of the St. Laurence O’Toole Gaelic Athletic Association club, led by Frank Cahill, with strong links to Irish cultural and political life—early supporters and attendees included figures such as Pádraig Pearse and Douglas Hyde.
In its early years, the band was closely tied to Ireland’s turbulent history, taking part in public demonstrations during the 1913 Dublin Lock-out and the War of Independence, when its headquarters were even attacked. Following the Irish Civil War, the band stepped away from political involvement and focused on music and competition.
SLOT became a leading force in Irish pipe banding, winning the All-Ireland Championships in 1958 and regularly competing in Scotland. After a period of decline in the 1960s, the band rebuilt under the Tully family, rising back through the grades and reaching Grade 1 by the late 1980s.
From the 2000s onward, the band established itself as a consistent top-tier competitor. Its drum corps, in particular, became one of the most successful in the world, winning multiple world drumming titles.
The band’s defining moment came in 2010, its centenary year, when it won the World Pipe Band Championship in Glasgow—along with other major titles that season—cementing its status among the elite.
Today, St. Laurence O’Toole remains Ireland’s premier Grade 1 band, known for musical innovation and a distinctive, expressive style.
