About the Band

Shotts and Dykehead Caledonia Pipe Band was founded in 1910 in Shotts, North Lanarkshire, under Pipe Major Dugald MacFarlane. Its beginnings were humble, with early practices reportedly held in MacFarlane’s own home, before the band gradually built itself into one of the great names in pipe band history.

The band’s rise gathered pace under Pipe Major Tom McAllister, who took over in 1929. Shotts won the Grade 2 World Championship in 1935, moved into Grade 1, and soon became a major force. After the Second World War, the band won World titles in 1948 and 1952, setting the tone for decades of success.

The McAllister era continued with J.K. McAllister, alongside legendary leading drummer Alex Duthart. Between 1957 and 1960, Shotts won four consecutive World Championships, a landmark run in pipe band history. Later leaders, including Tom McAllister Jr., Robert Mathieson, Jim Kilpatrick and Ryan Canning, helped maintain the band’s elite reputation.

Shotts has won the World Pipe Band Championships 16 times, with victories including 1948, 1952, 1957-60, 1970, 1973, 1974, 1980, 1994, 1997, 2000, 2003, 2005 and 2015. Their 2015 win was especially notable, bringing the Grade 1 world title back to Scotland for the first time since their own 2005 victory.

Today, Shotts and Dykehead Caledonia remains a Grade 1 band and one of the most respected names in piping and drumming. A proper Lanarkshire heavyweight, not just a band, more a musical anvil with drones.
