About the Band

Vale of Atholl Pipe Band was founded in early 1906 in Pitlochry, Perthshire, originally as the Vale of Atholl Pipers’ Association. From the beginning, the band was closely tied to local community music-making and wore the Murray of Atholl tartan, a tradition associated with its identity.

Under Pipe Major Ian Duncan, who took charge in the 1970s, the Vale developed from a largely local, non-competing band into one of Scotland’s most influential competition bands. Its teaching system produced strong juvenile and senior players, while its Grade 1 band became known for inventive arrangements, ambitious medleys and memorable concerts.

The band’s most celebrated period came in the late 1980s and 1990s, when it became a regular force at major championships and helped shape modern pipe band music. Today, the Vale of Atholl remains an important Perthshire pipe band organisation, combining competition, tuition and community performance while continuing a tradition that stretches back more than a century.
