About the Band

ScottishPower Pipe Band is a Grade 1 pipe band based in Glasgow, best known today as one of Scotland’s leading competition bands.

The band was originally formed in 1969 under the name British Caledonian Airways Pipe Band, thanks to sponsorship from the airline. They made their mark quickly, winning the Grade 2 World Pipe Band Championship in 1977, then moving up into Grade 1 the following year. During the British Caledonian era, the band travelled widely and performed internationally.

In 1989, after British Caledonian sponsorship ended, the band became linked with ScottishPower, eventually taking the name ScottishPower Pipe Band. In the mid-1990s, under Pipe Major Roddy MacLeod, the band adopted the corporate ScottishPower tartan, replacing its earlier Ancient Caledonia tartan.

The band has had several major figures at the helm, including Roddy MacLeod and, from 2006, Chris Armstrong, who has led them through a long modern Grade 1 era. They have consistently competed at the top level, with notable major success including the Grade 1 British Championship in 2018.

They are also known beyond the competition circle, having performed at high-profile events including royal occasions, the Royal Variety Performance, and major concerts. In short: ScottishPower are one of those bands that have gone from corporate-sponsored outfit to serious Grade 1 heavyweight, with a strong musical identity and a long habit of bothering the top end of the results sheet.
