About the Band

City of Wellington Pipe Band is based in Wellington, New Zealand, and was formed in 1932. It became one of New Zealand’s most successful pipe bands, winning its first national Grade 1 title in 1955 and then remaining either champion or runner-up almost every year from 1951 to 1988, apart from 1958 when the band was overseas.

The band is recorded in the Guinness Book of Records for the most consecutive national championship wins by a pipe band, marking it as one of the country’s major historic competition bands. It is also the official pipe band of Wellington City Council and was granted the council crest by mayoral decree.

Internationally, City of Wellington has appeared at the Edinburgh Military Tattoo several times, including 1980, 1987, 2002, 2005 and 2016. The band currently parades and competes in Ancient McKinnon tartan, adopted in 2018 in honour of respected former Pipe Majors Lou and Frank McKinnon.
