About the Band

Manawatu Scottish Pipe Band is a Grade 1 pipe band based in Palmerston North, New Zealand. The organisation traces its origins to 1923, when it was known as the Manawatu Highland Pipe Band, and it has long been closely linked with the Manawatu Scottish Society. Some public summaries give 1925 as the establishment date for the Manawatu Scottish name, so 1923 is best treated as the deeper organisational root.

Today, Manawatu Scottish is one of New Zealand’s major pipe band organisations, with multiple bands and learner activity under the same umbrella. RNZPBA notes that it now includes three bands and a learners’ group, while other public profiles describe a Grade 1 band, Grade 3 band, Grade 4 development band, supporters’ club and administration structure.

The band has built a strong international reputation. Since 1997, Manawatu Scottish has made regular trips to Scotland to compete at the World Pipe Band Championships, reaching as high as 9th in the world, and it was invited to perform at the Festival Interceltique de Lorient in France in 2003.

Competitively, Manawatu Scottish has been one of New Zealand’s leading Grade 1 bands. Its public profile lists national Grade 1 championship wins from 2001 to 2006, 2008, and 2025.
