About the Band

Guelph Pipe Band is a long-running civilian pipe band from Guelph, Ontario, Canada, founded in 1922 and continuously active since then. Its creation was linked to Guelph’s Scottish community, with early fundraising by local women’s organisations helping launch the band. The first Pipe Major was James Hill, who had emigrated from Perth, Scotland, and the band’s Perth connection is reflected in its cap badge.

The band wears McRae/MacRae tartan and has spent more than a century piping in Guelph, across Ontario, and at Highland games further afield. During the Second World War, members served with the Highland Light Infantry, and Guelph Pipe Major Art Corstorphine led Canadian bands into Berlin for the 1945 Allied Victory Parade.

Competitively, Guelph has a strong Ontario and international story. In 1968, under Pipe Major Bob Whittle and Lead Drummer Andy Donachie, the band placed fifth in its class at the World Pipe Band Championships in Grangemouth. In 1976, it won the North American Championship in Grade II. The band also has links to major piping figure Edward Neigh, one of the first non-Scottish pipers to win the Dunvegan Medal.

Today, Guelph Pipe Band remains active in performance, competition, youth activity and Scottish cultural promotion.
