About the Band

Hamilton Caledonian Pipe Band is based in Hamilton, New Zealand, and traces its origins to 1925, when it was formed as the South Auckland Caledonian Society, building on an earlier organisation from 1917. On 12 June 1928, it was incorporated as the Hamilton Caledonian Society, with the pipe band becoming central to the society’s Scottish cultural activities.

Over the decades, the society promoted Scottish tradition through concerts, social events, choirs, marching teams, sports teams and pipe band activity. A major milestone came in 1963, when the society opened its own hall in Grey Street, Hamilton East. Competitively, the band enjoyed strong periods, including success in A Grade in the 1960s, then later rebuilding through the grades under Trevor Andrews, winning Grade 3 at the 1980 Nationals and Grade 2 the following year.

The band later reached Grade 1, struggled with membership during the 1990s, and rebuilt through teaching and lower-grade bands. Its Grade 2 band won national titles in 2005 and 2006, earning promotion again. Today, Hamilton Caledonian continues as a multi-band organisation, keeping “The Callies” name alive with competition, tuition and community performance.
