About the Band

Black Raven Pipe Band is based in Lusk, County Dublin, Ireland, and was founded in 1910. Its origins are closely tied to the Gaelic revival and local hurling culture in Fingal. The idea for the band developed after members of Naomh Mac Cullen Hurling Club saw the Beady Pipers from Armagh parading in Dublin and were inspired to create a band of their own. Thomas Ashe, then a schoolmaster at Corduff and later a major figure in Irish nationalist history, helped found the band with John Rooney.

The band grew quickly, practising in Lusk’s Library Hall and attracting early members from the local area. By 1911 it had uniforms, and in 1913 and 1914 it won Championship of Ireland honours at Galway and Killarney. Public histories note that the band later faced upheaval during the revolutionary period, including loss of instruments, before reforming in 1928 and continuing its role in Irish piping.

Today, Black Raven remains proudly associated with Lusk and continues to perform, teach and compete. Its own public profile describes it as “The Pride of Lusk”, founded in 1910, and welcoming new members and students.
