About the Band
Ravara Pipe Band is based in Ballygowan, County Down, Northern Ireland, and has been part of the competitive pipe band scene for many decades. The band has built a strong reputation as one of Northern Ireland’s most respected outfits, with a sizeable membership and a long record of success across the grades.
A major modern chapter began in 1987 when Samuel “Sammy” Connolly became Pipe Major at just 18 years old. In his first year in charge, Ravara were runners-up at the World Championships in Grade 3 and became Champion of Champions on the Northern Ireland circuit, earning promotion to Grade 2.
The band’s drum corps also became a major strength. In 1991, renowned drummer Bobby Rea took over the corps, and Ravara’s drummers won the Grade 2 drumming title at the World Championships.
Ravara reached Grade 1 for the third time in its history in 2012, marking another high point for the band. After later rebuilding, the band surged again in 2024, winning the Grade 2 World Championship and the RSPBA Grade 2 Champion of Champions title, which earned them promotion back to Grade 1.
In 2025, Ravara competed in Grade 1 at the World Pipe Band Championships and finished 10th, confirming their return to the top-flight scene.
Today, Ravara stands as a proper County Down heavyweight: disciplined, resilient, and clearly not scared of climbing the grade ladder with both sticks and chanters sharpened.
