About the Band

Syerla & District Pipe Band is based in Syerla, near Moygashel in South Tyrone, Northern Ireland. Public information on its early history is limited, but current RSPBA Northern Ireland Branch listings place the band in the Mid Ulster section, competing in Grade 3A, wearing Ancient Caledonian tartan, with Brian McMullan listed as Pipe Major and Billy Black as Leading Drummer.

The band has climbed strongly through the grades in recent years. It was performing in Grade 4B at Cookstown in 2019, later appeared in Grade 4A, then Grade 3B, and by 2026 was listed and promoted as a Grade 3A outfit.

A major modern highlight came in 2025, when Syerla & District won the Grade 3B All-Ireland Pipe Band Championship and also took Best Drums. The RSPBA Northern Ireland Branch also congratulated Leading Drummer Billy Black and the band as 2025 World Drumming Champions in Grade 3B.

So, while a founding year is not clearly published, Syerla & District’s recent story is one of serious upward movement: a South Tyrone band building momentum, silverware, and a drum corps that clearly didn’t come to politely tap in the corner.
